Types of Car Charging Stations Explained

Types of Charging Stations

The car charging process doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here’s a look at the three most commonly used types of charging stations and what kind of vehicles they’re used for.

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 charging is typically found in work or residential buildings, though Level 1 charging is available at public charging stations, as well. It uses the traditional outlet found in residential homes because it has the lowest voltage, which also makes it the slowest form of vehicle charging.

To that end, Level 1 charging is typically reserved for plug-in hybrid vehicles, which have a smaller battery than fully electric cars.

Level 2 Charging

Level 2 charging stations are available in public but can also be installed at home. They have a higher and faster voltage than Level 1 charging, which means they’re an appropriate pick for both plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles.

Level 2 charging is a good option if you use your alternative energy vehicle regularly.

Level 3 Charging

Level 3 charging is only available at public charging stations. That’s because it has the highest level of voltage, which cannot be supported by residential homes. Level 3 charging, which is also known as DC fast charging, is best reserved for fully electric cars.
