Honda Introduces the Highest Tech Accord Yet in High Tech’s U.S. Hub—Silicon Valley

  • Upgraded 2016 Accord features one of the first applications of both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ in a volume-produced vehicle
  • More dynamic styling, including first 19-inch wheels on Accord
  • Honda Sensing™ safety and driver-assistive tech available on all trims
  • New 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface
Honda introduced a refreshed 2016 Accord loaded with advanced technology in Silicon Valley today, the first time the company has launched a new vehicle in the U.S. tech hub. Coming to market in August, the 2016 Accord will be the first Honda model and among the first high-volume cars in the marketplace to feature both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. These and other major upgrades to technology and features make it the most high-tech Accord ever.
The 2016 Accord Sedan and Coupe receive dynamic new styling, a new Display Audio touchscreen interface, and Honda Sensing™, the most comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies in the midsize car class. The 2016 Accord also adds HD Radio®, heated rear seats, front and rear parking sensors, and a number of other new features and technology to be revealed in coming weeks. Details on the Accord Hybrid will be announced at a later date.
"Where else to introduce the most technologically advanced midsize sedan, the 2016 Accord, than in Silicon Valley," said John Mendel, executive vice president of the Automobile Division, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Customers want their vehicles to be more intelligently integrated with their smartphone-powered lives, and we are committed to delivering that experience starting with Accord, retail car buyers' most popular vehicle the past two years."
Exterior and Interior design
The 2016 Accord gets a major facelift with sportier, more sophisticated styling, front and rear. In front is a more sharply creased and intricately structured bumper fascia with outside edges that tuck into intake-like meshed areas that house new LED fog lights (Sport trim and above). A new aluminum hood features sharper character lines that meet up with a brighter, more expressive front grille. In the rear, the Accord gets restyled LED taillights and a similarly aggressive rear bumper fascia redesign.
While all models feature restyled wheels, the Accord Sedan (Sport and Touring trim) and Coupe (Touring, new for Coupe) get new, larger 19-inch wheels and tires. The Touring sedan also gets a new rear deck spoiler. All models, Coupe and Sedan, feature the expanded use of LED lighting – LED taillights for all models, LED headlights for the new Touring Coupe, and LED daytime running lights (DRLs) for Sport and above trims.
Honda Sensing™
All 2016 Accords also can now be equipped with Honda Sensing™, among the most comprehensive suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies in the class. Honda Sensing includes a Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and is available as a standalone option on all trims with the exception of Touring, where Honda Sensing is included as standard equipment.
Also, all 2016 Accords feature a standard Multi-Angle Rearview Camera and Expanded View Driver's Mirror and, for the first time, new auto high-beam headlights (Touring trim) that enhance nighttime visibility and driving convenience by defaulting to the high-beam setting and automatically switching to low beams when an oncoming vehicle is detected.
Display Audio with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™
The Accord audio and digital experience also is significantly upgraded with the application of a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface featuring Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto, on EX and above trims, as well as available HondaLink™ Assist (e911) and HD Radio. The intuitive and easy-to-use capacitive touchscreen lets users swipe, tap and pinch—just like on a tablet or smartphone—to control the vehicle's audio system, display settings and other advanced features.
Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto are designed to support seamless smart phone integration and offer a multitude of new functions and features.
Apple CarPlay® takes the things you want to do with your iPhone while driving and puts them right on your car's built-in display. You can get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri. Supported apps include Phone, Messages, Maps, Music and compatible third party apps. Apple CarPlay® is compatible with iOS 7.1 or later and iPhone 5 or later.
Android Auto was designed to give drivers a simple, intuitive way through touch and voice to minimize the potential for distraction so the driver can stay focused on the road. Compatible with Android 5.0 and higher, Android Auto features Google Maps, Google Now, messaging, music and numerous popular apps.
To take full advantage of these new systems and features, the 2016 Accord's new 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen is paired with an upper 7.7-inch high-resolution display screen and steering wheel-mounted controls. The upper screen can display audio settings, turn-by-turn directions, time and trip information, LaneWatch™ and Rearview Camera displays, incoming calls, SMS text messages when stopped, and parking sensor alerts.
Upgraded Features
The Accord value proposition is further bolstered by new standard and available features: Accord EX and above trims (Sedan and Coupe) with automatic transmission get remote engine start, 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen and HD Radio. SiriusXM satellite radio and Homelink remote, previously on EX-L and Touring, are now standard on EX and above trims. Sport and above trims in the sedan lineup also get a new 60/40 split and folding rear seat, previously a one-piece folding design. The Accord Sedan in Touring trim gets heated rear seats, front and rear parking sensors and new rain-sensing windshield wipers.
Advanced Powertrains
The Accord will continue to be offered with two advanced Honda engines: a direct-injected (DI) 2.4-liter inline i-VTEC™ 4-cylinder and a 3.5-liter VTEC™ V-6 that is the most powerful engine offered in a Honda sedan to date. Available transmissions include a sporty and fuel-efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the 4-cylinder engines, unique 6-speed manuals for the 4-cylinder and V-6 engines, and a 6-speed automatic for V-6 models.

2015 Honda Fit, CR-V Win Satisfaction Awards

The primary concern of every Honda dealership in the country, it’s safe to say, is customer satisfaction. Obviously that can be broken down into a lot of other little categories, but whether we’re talking about sales or service or even the vehicles themselves, everything amounts to how happy we can make our customers. Knowing that, it’s always a huge honor when a Honda model wins an award selected in some way by the customers themselves, and the 2015 AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards are an excellent example of that.

Honda’s Anna Engine Plant Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Honda of America Mfg.'s Anna Engine Plant, Honda's largest automobile engine plant in the world, today celebrated 30 years of engine production. The plant has produced more than 20.1 million engines since opening on July 22, 1985.
Since starting production with just 94 associates, the Anna Engine Plant has grown continuously to more than 2,800 associates who manufacture V-6 and four-cylinder engines, high-precision steel camshafts, crankshafts, cylinder sleeves and sophisticated pulley components for Honda's continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). The Anna plant, with an annual capacity of 1.16 million four- and six-cylinder engines, supplies engines to Honda assembly plants in Ohio, Indiana, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Through continued expansion, the now 2.4 million square-foot plant has supported the establishment of a number of engine component suppliers in Ohio, which supply parts to the Anna Engine Plant and other Honda manufacturing operations in North America and around the world.
Over the last four years, Honda has invested more than $800 million in the Anna engine facility, bringing the total plant investment to $2.25 billion.  This includes the 2014 construction of Honda's most technically advanced engine assembly line in North America to date.  The new turbo-capable line is 93,000 square feet and features over 100 robots. The production of turbo engines, which started at Anna last month, will power a new generation of Civics, including the all-new European Civic Type R which is equipped with the powerful 2.0-liter VTEC® Turbo, the most extreme and high-performing Type R engine ever built. The Anna-built VTEC Turbo is exported to the U.K. for assembly into the Civic Type R by Honda of the U.K. Manufacturing.
"Even more critical than the investments Honda has made in new technology is the passion and challenging spirit that our associates bring each day to the task of advancing Honda quality, efficiency and performance for our customers here in North America and around the world," said Paul Dentinger, Anna Engine Plant Manager. "Truly, our associates are powering the future of Honda."
Statewide, Honda employs 13,000 Ohioans at four manufacturing plants, a major R&D center for product development, a production engineering center for the creation of production tooling, a regional vehicle distribution center and other operations supporting Honda's auto manufacturing in North America.
About Honda in Ohio
Honda of America Mfg., Inc. includes the Marysville Auto Plant, East Liberty Auto Plant and Anna Engine Plant, along with additional facilities that support its manufacturing operations. With capacity to produce 440,000 automobiles per year, the Marysville plant currently is producing the Accord Sedan and Coupe and the Acura TLX and ILX Sedans. The East Liberty Auto Plant produces the Honda CR-V, Crosstour and the Acura RDX, with capacity to manufacture 240,000 automobiles per year.
Located in Russells Point, Ohio, Honda Transmission Mfg. of America, Inc. employs 1,125 associates and has capacity to produce more than 1 million automatic transmissions and CVTs per year. The plant also manufactures gear sets, four-wheel-drive systems and four-wheel-drive transfer components.
About Honda in North America
Honda established operations in America in 1959 and now employs more than 40,000 associates in its North American sales, R&D and manufacturing operations with total capital investment in North America exceeding $22 billion.
Based on its longstanding commitment to "build products close to the customer," Honda operates 16 major manufacturing facilities in North America producing a wide range of Honda and Acura automobiles, automobile engines and transmissions, Honda all-terrain vehicles, power equipment products, such as lawn mowers, mini-tillers and general purpose engines, and the HondaJet advanced light jet.
Eight Honda auto plants in the region, including four in the U.S., have the capacity to produce 1.92 million automobiles each year. In 2014, more than 97 percent of the Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. were produced in North America. Those plants today manufacture 12 different models, including five passenger cars and seven light trucks using domestic and globally sourced parts. A fifth U.S. auto plant, the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, will soon begin production of the next generation Acura NSX supercar. Honda also operates 14 major research and development centers in the U.S. with the capacity to fully design, develop and engineer many of the products Honda produces in North America.

2015 Honda CR-V Retains Its Value

All any American consumer wants is to keep as much of his or her money in his her or pocket as humanly possible. Okay, so there are other things to want, like religious enlightenment, familial happiness and maybe a jet ski, but money is certainly a big part of it, especially considering how hard we all work for it.

Buying a new car just so happens to be one of the biggest purchases anybody will ever make, but doing it right can save the buyer literally thousands of dollars, and sometimes in ways that they don’t expect.

One of those ways is by purchasing a vehicle in the first place that holds its value well over time. In today’s automotive world, the average vehicle drops 17 percent of its value in the first twelve months of ownership, but there certainly are some vehicles that hold their value much more efficiently than that.

The 2015 Honda CR-V, for example, depreciates only 9 percent in the first year, which is almost half the average rate. Considering how much a new CR-V costs, that difference in depreciation can be worth literally thousands of dollars, which means that a consumer can save quite a bit of money just by choosing a certain SUV.

Brand new, the CR-V is the best-selling SUV in America, but the used and certified pre-owned CR-V models are in high demand, as well. Knowing that, it’s no wonder these vehicles hold their value so well after the first year; people are dying to buying them up.

Truthfully, all Honda cars do pretty well in the depreciation department, but we were pleased to see that the CR-V was among the industry leaders.

Statement by American Honda Finance Corporation

RE: Settlement with the Department of Justice and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

American Honda Finance Corporation (AHFC) has reached an agreement with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) that shows our commitment to work together to be part of the solution and to establish the path forward that best supports our Honda and Acura customers and dealers with clear and convenient financing options.
AHFC strongly opposes any form of discrimination, and we expect our dealers to uphold this principle as well. We firmly believe that our lending practices have been fair and transparent.
AHFC has a difference of opinion with the CFPB and the DOJ regarding the methodology used to make determinations about lending practices, but we nonetheless share a fundamental agreement in the importance of fair lending.
In cooperation with the CFPB and the DOJ, AHFC will be working closely with our Honda and Acura dealers in proactively adjusting our pricing programs to continue to give our customers the ability to choose the loan that is best for supporting their purchase of Honda and Acura products.
As part of this new program, AHFC will announce later this year adjustments to our caps for dealers in setting the rate for retail installment contracts lower than the present level.  We will be implementing this change in combination with other adjustments and modifiers in a way that continues to support our Honda and Acura dealers' present business compensation with a full array of financing options.
As a result of this settlement, no civil penalties have been assessed to AHFC. The company will establish a $24 million fund that will be used to compensate customers identified by the CFPB and the DOJ.
Further, AHFC will continue to enhance our long-standing commitment to support financial literacy education and ensure that the future generation of customers is well informed about the process of automobile finance.

Honda sets new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™

Honda has set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for ‘Lowest fuel consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries (all cars),’ recording an average 2.82 liters per 100km (100.31mpg) over 13,498km (8,387 miles), in a 25 day drive across all 24 EU contiguous countries.

Behind the wheel of a Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC for the entire journey were two members of Honda’s European Research & Development (R&D) team, Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren, who took on the challenge to further demonstrate the impressive real-world fuel economy of the Tourer.
The remarkable distance travelled is similar to the team driving to Australia from their home in the UK, stopping just nine times to refuel. The car achieved an incredible average 1500km (932 miles) on each tank of fuel, at a total fuel cost for the whole journey of just 645 Euros* (£459).
The team set out on their epic road trip from Aalst, Belgium, on Monday June 1st, navigating the continent in a clockwise direction. They returned to their start point on Thursday June 25th, recording the incredible fuel economy figures which exceed the Tourer’s quoted efficiency of 3.8 liters per 100km (74.3mpg), by more than 25%.
Fergal McGrath comments: “It was tough, but we really enjoyed it, and setting this new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title has made all of the hard work worthwhile. This was a huge team effort so I’d like to thank everyone involved for all of their commitment and support. After spending so much time behind the wheel Julian and I are just happy to be back behind our desks for a while!”
The official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title is ‘Lowest Fuel Consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries,’ measured in liters per 100km and miles per gallon calculated over the entire journey.
Under the rules the same two drivers must be in the car for the whole journey, giving Fergal and Julian, Honda R&D colleagues of some 18 years and based in the UK, the challenge of driving an average of approximately 600km, taking around 7.5 hours, each day.
Based on strict and rigorous guidelines, the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt required the car to enter each of the 24 countries specified, collecting a range of evidence including a fuel/mileage logbook, GPS readings, video and photographs and independent witness signatures to prove that it has done so. To ensure accurate monitoring of the route, journey time and distance driven, the record car was fitted with a tracking device, provided by fleet telematics and stolen vehicle recovery expert, TRACKER (part of the Tantalum Corporation).
Under the rules of the record title attempt the car must be a standard model in every respect, with no modifications to create an advantage, to replicate ‘real world’ conditions. This was judged by independent witnesses at the beginning and end of the attempt. Fueling was carried out at regular filling stations, with the tank filled to the maximum at each stop to ensure no weight advantage. Additionally, tires were inflated to the recommended pressures and the wheel alignment set to factory specification to represent the experience of the regular customer.
The team, both amateur drivers, were also keen to show that through adopting some simple but very effective driving techniques, anybody could achieve such remarkable fuel economy. They simply used some very logical methods including careful and sensible route planning, driving smoothly and consistently without harsh acceleration or braking, anticipating the road conditions ahead, carrying no unnecessary weight, and ensuring that the car was correctly maintained at all times. Driving speed was always within the law and keeping up with traffic conditions.
Kate Saxton, Manager – PR Communications at Honda Motor Europe Ltd comments: "This is an incredible achievement and the team should all be very proud of the efforts that they have put in to set this new GUINNESS WORLD RECORD. Driving the equivalent distance from their home in the UK to Australia in just 25 days is a huge challenge very few would take on. The fuel economy figures are remarkable – particularly when you consider that this is not a small car, but a tourer with class-leading load space and vast practicality.”

  • The best-selling CR-V posted record June sales, realizing a 8.5 percent increase on sales of 28,349 vehicles.
  • Overall light truck sales remain on a record pace with Odyssey posting a 6.5 percent increase in June with sales of 11,621, supporting the record sales of CR-V and strong start for HR-V while the all-new 2016 Pilot enters the market.
  • Sales of the versatile Fit jumped 26.3 percent, with 4,669 vehicles sold last month, part of the strong passenger car lineup that included combined sales of nearly 60,000 units for Civic and Accord.
"With the introduction of the 2016 Pilot late last month, our SUV lineup is the strongest it has ever been, and it was already in very good shape," said Jeff Conrad, Honda Division senior vice president and general manager. "The next several months will be exciting as we begin to renew and expand our car lineup."
Acura
Acura sedans stepped into the sales limelight in June, continuing recent momentum and doubling last year's June sedan sales total on the strength of TLX and ILX. Overall Acura sales totaled 15,527, lifting the brand 38.6 percent in June. Not to be outdone, Acura's RDX captured yet another sales record in June while MDX remained in high demand, though somewhat capacity constrained. Overall, Acura truck sales were up 15.2 percent with sales of 9,649 vehicles.
  • TLX sales continued to gain momentum, nearly reaching 4,000 units again.
  • ILX took a sharp upward turn with a record June performance, gaining 79.1 percent on sales of 1,662. Acura sedan sales totaled 5,878 in June, a 107.9 percent increase.
  • The recently refreshed RDX continued to resonate strongly with customers, up 45.1 percent on sales of 5,056 for its best June on record.
"It is exciting to see Acura sedans enjoy success in the face of a market where light trucks have been dominating," said Mike Accavitti, Acura Division senior vice president and general manager. "We're pleased by the record month for the refreshed RDX, but the growing momentum of the TLX and ILX is key to the future of the Acura brand."

Honda Fit is Mega Hit with Buyers and Critics Alike as 2016 Model Goes On Sale

Offering one of the most space efficient and versatile packages in the U.S. market, the 2016 Honda Fit tops it off with fun, fuel efficiency and style

Launching last year to strong reviews and eager buyers, the third-generation Honda Fit has since set a blistering sales pace while continuing to garner praise. Now the playful and practical 2016 Fit is ready to take the baton, carrying forward best-in-class passenger and cargo space, 41 mpg highway fuel-economy rating1 and sporty yet refined dynamics when it goes on sale July 1 at Honda dealerships nationwide.
With a starting manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP)2 of $15,790 for the Fit LX with 6-speed manual transmission, the 2016 Fit includes an abundance of class-above standard features including roofline spoiler, LED taillights, Bluetooth® connectivity and a rearview camera. All Fits are powered by a responsive direct-injected1.5-liter i-VTEC® engine from the Honda Earth Dreams Technology™ lineup, producing 130 horsepower3 and 114 pound feet of torque4, with an EPA fuel-economy rating of 33/41/36 (city/highway/combined)5 for the LX with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
"The new Fit has been a tremendous hit with buyers seeking a fun, practical and stylish transportation solution," said Jeff Conrad, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Honda. "It's a satisfying car for a wide variety of needs and lifestyles."
Outstanding versatility is fundamental to the design of the Fit. With class-leading interior space and clever configurability courtesy of its center-mounted fuel tank and ingenious Magic Seat®, the Fit epitomizes functionality with spacious and comfortable seating for five and the ability to accommodate large amounts of cargo, including long and tall items.
The 2016 Fit offers a sophisticated yet sporty ride, with responsive and stable handling dynamics. Honda's next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure also benefits handling, as well as safety performance. In fact, the Fit achieves the highest crash-safety ratings in its class for both the U.S. government and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
An Earth Dreams Technology™ direct-injection 1.5L DOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine powers the Fit. It's tuned for a fine balance of power, torque and response, and is carefully matched with two recently developed transmissions—a slick-shifting 6-speed manual and a CVT with Honda's exclusive G-Shift Control. The 2016 Fit has an EPA fuel-economy rating of 29/37/32 (city/highway/combined)5 for the manual transmission, 33/41/36 for the LX trim with CVT and 32/38/35 for the EX and EX-L trim with CVT.
The Fit sports a fresh, dynamic exterior design with headlights that integrate into a solid grille design and an aggressive lower intake. Chiseled sides emphasize the wheels and the dynamically tapered roofline that terminates in a color-matched spoiler. Eight colors, including several vibrant options accentuate the design.
Inside, the Fit's interior room and visibility create a sense of airy spaciousness, complemented by soft-touch materials for a quality feel. The available Display Audio touchscreen interface and available leather seating (EX-L models) further communicate a premium feel.
A high level of standard and available features are offered in three trims—LX, EX, and EX-L. Standard features on all Fit models include auto on-off headlights, LED brake lights, Bluetooth®6 HandsFreeLink® and a center storage console with armrest. Items such as Smart Entry Push Button Start, a one-touch operated moonroof, 7-inch touchscreen Display Audio7 with next-generation HondaLink and heated leather seats are among the available upgrades.
The Fit also features a long list of standard safety features, including Vehicle Stability AssistTM (VSA®) with traction control, side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, and Honda's next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. The Fit has received the highest available crash-safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)—a five-star Overall Vehicle Score—and a TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the IIHS. Standard driver-assistive features on all trims include a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines and an expanded view driver's mirror. The Honda LaneWatch™ system is standard on EX and above trims.
