Here’s why. Average stopping distance from 60 miles per hour is about 240 feet. That number, however, assumes ideal conditions. That means you’re driving in dry weather, with good brakes and good road conditions in your favor. If those variables change, trouble sets in. You can’t control the weather or the road conditions in San Diego, but you can and should keep an eye on those brakes.

A brake check doesn’t take long. You can even check the wear on your brake pads right now by walking outside and looking between the spokes on your wheel. If the pad has less than 2/32 of an inch of pad remaining, it’s time for new pads. Neglect that simple change and you’ll start seeing wear to other, more expensive, components like your calipers and rotors.
