Sometimes
what a car is not is just as important as what it is. As you ponder that, turn
your attention to the 2019
Honda Insight,
available now to the San Diego area drivers served by Pacific Honda. It has a
lot to offer, and some interesting omissions that make for a strong car.
The
first thing they left out is immediately apparent when you look at this compact
sedan’s exterior. It’s aggressively… normal. For too long, hybrids have been
characterized by polarizing styling, but the Honda Insight is closer in size
and looks to the Honda Civic than it is to the last car to carry the Insight
badge, or many of its competitors.
Something
else that was left out was a transmission. That’s because the 1.5 liter
4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine is there to provide juice to charge the
batteries and to generate electricity for an electric drive motor. Not having a
transmission means a weight savings, which translates to fuel economy; it also
means you get even more out of every one of the 151 net horsepower and 197
lb.-ft. of torque.
That’s
not to say they’ve thrown out the baby with the bathwater. The interior has a
level of craftsmanship that positions this car between the Honda
Civic
and the Honda Accord. It also features dual digital displays, one of which
controls the infotainment system (with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™) while
the other replaces the traditional gauges of the instrument cluster.
There’s
also plenty of safety tech on offer. Honda Sensing™ features (like
lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and road departure mitigation)
come standard, with the higher trims having the option of the camera systems on
offer with Honda LaneWatch.
In
short, this car may look normal, but it’s a long way from ordinary. To find out
more or schedule your test drive, you can call 858-694-1000 or just drop by the
Pacific Honda showroom at 4761 Convoy St.
in San Diego, CA.
