Android OS Coming to Honda Infotainment

In the first week of 2014, Honda and Google announced a partnership that could not only change the face of infotainment systems moving forward, but could ultimately culminate in the mainstreaming of self-driving cars.

We’re getting ahead of ourselves, though. We’ll start with the lead, before it’s too late and we bury it: Google and Honda have agreed to use the Android operating system for its vehicles’ infotainment, which is awesome for so many reasons.

The first of these is the fact that the Android OS is well-established, which means drivers will have familiarity with the interface and can feel confident that glitches in an automotive version will be minimal. That familiarity also could mean safer driving, as there will be no “getting used to” a new platform when someone buys a car with an infotainment system for the first time. Pacific Honda customers already are familiar with the layout and customization options, which should make operating it very easy.

Perhaps even cooler is that this likely represents the first step towards connected and autonomous vehicles. Google is working on technology that allows vehicles to communicate with other vehicles and even traffic lights to ensure safe driving. Add to that the technology afforded from Google Maps and other advanced safety tech, and it would appear as though self-driving cars won’t be too far off, which your local Honda Dealership near Lemon Grove must be absolutely thrilled about.

Android will start showing up in Honda vehicles later this year, and we’re thrilled about what this means for the future of Honda cars, SUVs, and minivans!
